How to control cockroaches

We are going to let you in on some information – but you might not like what we have to say. That big, eerie-looking cockroach you found crawling around the house? It is very unlikely that it is the only roach in your home. There is a chance that the cockroach came from a nest hidden within your home, where hundreds (maybe thousands) of fellow roaches are waiting to explore your space. So, how can you get rid of cockroaches at home? We have some tips to help.

How do cockroaches reproduce?

First, it can be helpful to understand why we tend to find large groups of cockroaches nesting together. Cockroaches can multiply at an astonishing rate, with a single female having the ability to give birth to at least 400 baby cockroaches in her lifetime. They also have a short lifespan, which means those hundreds of babies quickly grow into bothersome adults.

How to control cockroaches at home

This means, when dealing with a cockroach infestation, the first thing to do is to locate the nest

Investigate throughout your home, focusing on dark areas free from vibration and noise. There are four species of cockroaches commonly found in Indian homes: the German cockroach, the American cockroach, the brown banded cockroach and the Oriental cockroach, and all of them prefer warm, moist areas in your home.

This means you’ll most likely be able to find their nests near plumbing fixtures in bathrooms and kitchens, within cracks in cupboards, under drawers and inside or underneath appliances. You may also notice cockroach droppings around the nest’s location, or your nose can help you sniff it out — most cockroach nests have a strong, foul odour.

If you have only a handful of cockroaches to get rid of, a spray can be the best optionMortein 2-in-1 Insect Spray is designed to kill cockroaches immediately and is India’s first aerosol with a triple-active formula. As soon as you spot a cockroach scurrying about your home, all you will need to do is shake the can and aim directly at the cockroach to kill it quickly and effectively.

But, if you have a serious roach problem on your hands, you will need to learn how to kill cockroaches en-mass, and you may even need to call in an exterminator.

How to get rid of cockroaches in the kitchen

One of the main reasons cockroaches may venture out of their hiding spot is to scavenge for food or water. This means your kitchen is likely to be their prime target

They are foragers, so it is better to stack all your food in sealed containers, ensuring you do not leave open packets on your counter or in your pantry. Make sure you get rid of food and drink spills, too, and wipe down surfaces so they are dry before you go to bed (roaches are nocturnal creatures!). Make sure to throw away your rubbish too – roaches are not fussy about eating fresh food.

If these measures do not work in removing cockroaches from your kitchen, you will need to take more drastic action. Use a product like the Mortein NaturGard Cockroach Killer Spray, which is designed to kill cockroaches immediately with a simple spray. Its formula is made from natural extracts, making them ideal if you want to get rid of cockroaches naturally in your kitchen.
